Poker Variations

Steven Bednarek

Poker has become a generic name for literally hundreds of variations of the game. The common theme being basing the wins on ranking of the cards held and the bets placed. These interrelated games commonly fall under the following categories: straight, stud, draw and community. The differences are based on the way the cards are dealt and the betting structure.

The most popular kinds of poker games played in casinos are 7-card stud, 5-card draw, Texas hold them and Omaha.

Poker has varying rules based on the different games placed. In some games such as the seven card stud the highest hand in the showdown wins and in other games such as the draw lowball and razz the lowest hand wins. There are also games such as the high low split, in which the highest and the lowest hand split the pot in the showdown. There are also many exotic variations of poker such as Anaconda, Baseball, Follow the queen etc mostly played by the amateur players.

There are different variations of poker based on the betting structure too. Most home games and even those played in the casinos of Las Vegas are limit games. Limit games are games in which the limits are set on the minimum and the maximum bets. In smaller limit games of Las Vegas such as a $1 seven card stud there is usually no ante or initial bet. In higher limit card games there is rigid betting structure. For example there may be a maximum limit of $5 bets per hand and the raise limit may be also structured at $5. This means than everyone at the table irrespective of how good they think their hand is, cannot bet of raise over $5 per round.

Apart from the betting limits the poker games may also vary by the pot-limit or pot-no limit. In the pot-limit games the player may make bets and raises for any amount up to the size of the pot. In the no-limit poker a player may raise or bet any amount that is in front of him at any time.

The experts however realize that despite the numerous varieties of poker there are common threads of logic run through all of them. While familiarity with the rules of a particular variant of the game certainly helps, more importantly a sound understanding of the betting theory helps one master different variations easily.
